What kind of art and craft activities can babies do?
At the very earliest age babies are developing their physical skills as they work to gain control of their arms and legs, support their own head, and focus their vision.
The most interesting work of art in the world to them is you! Make eye contact, talk with them and exchange smiles. They are learning to look, and to think about and make connections with what they see: a great foundation for all artists.
We’re still learning about how babies’ sight develops and which colours they can see, but it seems bold, saturated colours are best for very young babies. A fun art project for big siblings is to make an art work for their new baby sibling to look at, perhaps at nappy/diaper change times or at tummy time.
Babies can delight in joining in with siblings and parents on art adventures. Pop your baby in a sling and bring them along when you go on a nature walk or to visit a gallery. Once they can sit upright, use a high chair and let them watch and chat with siblings as they paint and draw. Your baby might like to hold and bang a clean paint brush or glue spreader, investigating the object and developing their grasp.
Sensory art activities for babies
When it comes to their first art activities, focus on offering sensory play experiences where they can explore materials. Babies must always be supervised and all materials must be touch-safe, and taste-safe (avoid all choking hazards) as babies will of course try to put things in their mouth.
Age-appropriate easy baby art activities to try include:
Investigating ice (*with no glitter for babies)
Exploring materials in discovery baskets
Trying out homemade finger paint
