The Nativity Story Part Two: Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem
The theme of the second day of our Nativity story is love.
Mary was to be married to Joseph. At this time, the ruler Caesar Augustus called for everyone in the country to return to their hometown to be registered. Joseph was from Bethlehem and so he and Mary had to travel there.
It was a long and tiring journey, and Joseph took care of pregnant Mary as they travelled.
When they got to Bethlehem, the town was so busy and full of people that Joseph could find nowhere for them to stay. It was nearly time for Mary to give birth to her baby and she needed to rest.
An inn-keeper offered them a place in his stable, where they sheltered with the animals and prepared to welcome the new baby.
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.
