Butterfly sight words printable
Sight words are the words that we want our children to learn to recognise by sight, without having to sound out the letters or de-code the word. With practice over time, children can become so familiar with these words they know them ‘by sight’, which speeds up their reading and writing, and gives them more confidence.
We sometimes call these words high-frequency words, including them in the set of most common words that children typically learn first as they begin to read and spell.
Schools and literacy programmes around the world have sets of sight word lists for children in reception, kindergarten, and first grade. They vary slightly from country to country and programme to programme but the basic lists are the same as they’re based on the words children will need to use in reading and writing most often, as they build their skills.
You can use this set of butterfly sight words to help your child learn these 100 high frequency words. I’ve included some blank butterfly cards too, so you can customise the set to your needs – perhaps including your child’s name in the set too.
How to use the butterfly sight word printables
Print the butterfly sight words printable (see below) and cut out the individual cards.
You might like to laminate the cards for extra durability.
There are many ways you can use these cards:
:: Use the butterfly sight word cards to play matching games. Print two sets and see if you can pair up the butterflies with the same words.
:: Place two sets of the butterfly cards face down and use them to play Memory.
:: Hide the butterfly cards around the house or garden and see if your children can find them all. Can they read the word they’ve found? Can they put it in a sentence?
:: use the cards to lay out simple sentences.
:: Hide the butterfly sight word cards in a sensory tub. Adding word cards in with your sensory play makes for a literacy-rich environment which supports children to recognise, be confident with, and read words. You can include them with our spring sensory tub.
:: Practice writing the words in a writing tray. Set out your butterfly high frequency word cards with a spring sensory writing tray, and invite your children to copy out the word into their tray.
:: send a small number of the words home with your children, so they can practice reading and writing the words with their family.
:: stick them up as a Word Wall display that your children can refer to easily as they write.
