Yesterday, boredom and a well stocked craft box were the spring board for creativity and play. Today it was a story book which gave a play idea.
Shirley Hughes books are favourites in our house and The Big Alfie Out of Doors Storybook (Red Fox picture books) is Little’s favourite of them all. It’s a collection of short stories and poems about outdoor play and adventures. One tells the story of Bonting, Alfie’s treasured pebble – so of course Little now has a Bonting of her own which she carries with her in her coat pocket. Today’s story though was about Alfie’s camping trip. Little is in awe of Alfie going to sleep out at night in a real tent. Now, the weather is still a little chilly to get me in a real tent overnight, so it’s forturnate she was satisfied with a play tent.
She knew from the story all the things she needed to take on her trip. Having said that, we have read the story several thousand times so she’s had plenty of time to memorise the list!
She even made a campfire to cook her breakfast on.
What’s your child’s favourite story? Could you bring it to life for them?
And if you love pretend play you might like these ideas for a role play shop and a role play hospital.

I’m finding that with my boys on school holidays it takes them a few days to work through boredom to get to playing creatively and imaginatively and becoming aborbed in something. I try not to give in to their boredom – because like your post – from boredom good things come!

We went and collected sticks and with wool, string and googly eyes created Julia Donaldson’s ‘Stick Man’. We have also done the same for children’s tv shows, we have a night garden land and a charlie and lola hairdressers, made in old shoe boxes.
Cathy says
What a great idea MayBee – my girls like to read Stick Man too.
Jade says
Now THAT’S fun! Thank you for the idea…

What a great idea, I’ll have to look that one up for my boys. Mr 6’s favourite book is Peggy by Heather Monro, about a clothesline, Mr 8 loves Specky McGee books, about football!

We have a Charlie and Lola book about a picnic and when it starts to rain they make a tent inside to picnic in instead. It’s a bit of a recent favourite so we have been picnicking in our play tent as well. Thanks for linking up 🙂

We’ve done pretend camping before – my boys love it. The pretend campfire and getting out the torches are their favourite parts.
Julie says
I LOVE that campfire. So cute.
Kelly Be A Fun Mum says
I love this so much!
Miss Carly says
Oh my! This is simply spectacular! I wonder if in a child care centre it would be allowed to have a tent with the books? Love it!
