These clever little cards helps children learn how to correctly write numbers. They’re also super useful for math practice.
How to use these rainbow writing number cards
Print the rainbow writing cards (see below) and cut them out.
Set out the cards with rainbow pencils: one each of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
Pick a number to work on and use the red pencil to write over the top of the grey digit, following the number’s shape correctly.
Use the orange pencil to write again over the red line, to give you a second orange number.
Write the digit again using the yellow pencil, and then repeat with the green, blue, indigo, and violet pencils.
This gives you seven chances to practice the formation of each number.
How to extend this math activity
The printable includes the numbers zero to nine, and symbols for add, subtract, divide, multiply, and equals.
Once you have filled each card with the rainbow colours, you can use your set of rainbow numbers for more math activities. You might like to laminate them at this stage, for extra durability.
:: set out the card alongside a sensory writing tray and copy the numbers into the tray. This give children the opportunity to write the number themselves without the grey guiding line
:: use loose parts to count out the matching number of items for each card (three buttons, two pom poms…)
:: use the cards as hands-on manipulatives to practice arithmetic. Line them up to form sums and work out the answer
