Brain boosting month: how much does it weigh?

Who says August has to be a brain-drain month? Join me for a summer of brain boosting fun!

All through August I’m asking the children a Brain Boosting question each day and inviting them to explore what the answer might be. Each question will be a prompt for the children to think, question, wonder, explore, discover and learn! Will you join us?

I’ll be posting a question a day here and on Nurturestore’s Facebook page, so hop on over and follow us. I’ll be blogging some of the discoveries my kids make and re-visiting some of our favourite ideas from Nurturestore’s archive. We might have a few guest questions from other kids bloggers too.

We’ll be covering lots of different topics, including art, science, writing and maths. Each question is designed to be open to the children to explore an idea their way and gives plenty of scope for them to try out ideas, discover new things and learn some new skills. Each activity will be really easy for you to set up at home, with no special equipment needed.

Kids in the kitchen: easy rocky road recipe

Oh my, oh my! This is one of my all time favourite recipes because it’s so delicious and also so super easy kids can try it (almost) by themselves. I’ve written before about what kids learn while baking and this recipe is a good one to get them started. They can read the recipe, weigh and measure the ingredients and learn lots of kitchen skills as they cook. There’s no baking involved, just some melting, so with supervision they can join in every step.

We call it Loopy Cake, a name inherited from a family friend who gave us the original recipe. Perhaps because once people have tasted it and discovered how yummy it is, they will drive you loopy pestering you to make some more. I have a vague memory of my mum making us all wait until there were enough broken biscuit crumbs in the bottom of our cookie jar before she would make it – but surely she wasn’t really that mean?

Most people I know call it Rocky Road – and everyone I know loves it. Here’s how to make it.

Pretend play post office

‘No! Don’t talk to me Mummy. Send me a letter!’

Our house has been transformed this week with the creation of a pretend play post office. Children who used to run off into the garden at the sight of a pencil and piece of paper are getting up early to check their mail and write replies. Everyone is excited to find mail waiting for them outside their bedroom door when they wake up in the morning and lots of kind wishes are being expressed between siblings in their correspondence. The children are putting in plenty of writing practice too of course and learning the value of letters – making their mark with a practical purpose and having lots of fun as they learn.

Play dough activities: gazillions of ideas for play dough fun!

I have enjoyed this Play Dough Pledge week so much! At home we’ve had so much fun with our Play Dough Pizza Parlour and our play dough mandalas. I loved the Play Dough Bakery idea Anna shared with us over at The Imagination Tree and the Play Dough Self Portraits Catherine shared at Sun Hats and Wellie Boots.
