We teach our children math so they will have the skills they need to be happy, successful adults, and the best way to learn every day math skills is to do everyday math skills.
In this activity, taken from our Fun Math curriculum, we’re using the every day opportunity of snack time to learn about division.

In this activity, your children can:
:: see math at work in the real world
:: count
:: be introduced to division
Materials needed
:: small snack items
Snack time happens every day and children are very keen for a fair division of treats, making this a great way to introduce and regularly practice the concept of division.
Make it part of your snack time routine to count how many children are here today.
:: Count out the plates and cups needed, and have a child hand them out: one for you, one for you…
:: Use math to work out how much food is needed today: if everyone gets two cookies we need 2 times (20 children).
If we have 62 grapes and we need to divide them between 20 children, how many grapes will each child get? Will there be any left over?
Your children will likely not be able to calculate these answers in their heads or in advance of actually sharing out the snacks: that’s OK. They are building in lots of math vocabulary, seeing division work in real terms, and beginning to understand the concepts.
Recap with all the children at the end:
:: We had 20 children at snack time today.
:: We shared out 40 cookies. Everyone got two cookies. 40 divided by 20 equals 2.
:: We divided out 62 grapes. Everyone got three grapes and there were two left over. 60 divided by 20 equals 3 with 2 remaining.
