What are multiples?
Multiples are an extension of addition and multiplication. They are the same as times tables but extend beyond the ‘12 x’ that we usually learn up to.
So, the multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36…….
The multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57….
Teaching multiple using blocks
To introduce the idea of extended multiples, give your children a big pile of blocks. Ask each child to make a chain of three blocks, fastened together.
Have each child come up and place their three blocks next to the one before, to assemble a visualisation of the multiples of three.
Count aloud along the blocks, through the three times table and beyond.
Playing musical multiples active math game
For a musical version of this, play a twist on musical chairs.
Play music while everyone dances around.
When the music stops, your children have to form together into threes, holding hands or standing together in their group.
Go around the room, having each group in turn call out their part of the multiples of 3. (First group “Three!”, second group “Six!” etc.)
Start the music for another round of Musical Multiples, calling out a different number to group into when the music stops.
Repeat both activities as much as you wish, for regular multiples practice.
