Autumn nature walk ideas
Walking through the natural environment is a core element of forest school. Often walks are very informal, minimally structured and child-led – a wonderful time to explore and respond to what the children find. Autumn walks are an opportunity for them to discover the new sights, smells and textures of the season.
You might also like to include a themed nature walk: specifically looking for autumn seeds perhaps. The Forest Classroom includes a range of themed walk ideas that you can use all through the year, and includes a printable forest treasure hunt which is great fun in fall.
Autumn foraging for elderberries
Elderberries are in season and ripe for picking in the autumn. They’re easy to identify and delicious when cooked up into a fruity syrup.
The Forest Classroom will teach your children about elderberries and how to identify them. It shows them how to make a delicious and healthy elderberry syrup or make elderberry paint, and has a printable nature journal page all about elderberries for each child.
Leaf symmetry forest school math lesson
Bring math outdoors this season with a lesson that combines the falling leaves with symmetry. The Forest Classroom will guide your children through an art and observation lesson that looks at reflection / lateral symmetry.
Tree ID lesson
This season is a great time to give a lesson on identifying the different species of trees in our forest school.
Children can learn to discern the leaves and seeds of a number of trees. This helps them develop the scientific skills of careful observation, accurate discrimination and classification.
The Forest Classroom book gives you a printable set of three-part tree cards which you can use in this lesson, with the name and pictures of the leaf and seed of common deciduous trees, along with six suggested activities for your children to get to know and identify each tree.
