Counting in 2s art activity

Let’s combine art and math in a STEAM activity which introduces skip counting and multiplication. We’ll explore printing and symmetry to create a visual display of the two times table.

Two times tables craft for kids

Making art to introduce each times table as you learn them is a great way to create a visual representation of the sequence that you can refer to again and again.

For the two times table try this math art project from our Fun Math curriculum, using the symmetry of butterfly wings to count up in twos.

Each child can make a printed butterfly craft and together make a two times table wall display.

In this activity, your children can:

:: create mathematical art

::explore printmaking

:: explore symmetry

:: be introduced to the two times table

Materials needed

:: card cut into butterfly shapes

:: paint

:: paint brushes or use fingers

Use a print transfer technique to make butterflies with symmetrical wings.

Fold the butterfly in half, to keep one side of the wings hidden for now. Use paint to decorate only the one side of the wing showing.

Open out the wings and fold them the other way, closing the unpainted side down on to the painted side.

Gently press the wings together to transfer the paint to the unpainted side.

Open up the folded butterfly to reveal the symmetrical wings.

When the paint is dry, write the two times table across the butterflies.

Use a marker pen to write the times table sequence, counting up two wings at a time on each butterfly. (So the first butterfly is number 2, the second butterfly is number 4…)

Stick the butterflies up on the wall to represent the two times table.
