This is a messy art project using a fun alternative to paint brushes – toothbrushes! It introduces children to the concepts of negative space and silhouettes.
Materials needed:
:: pumpkin and bat templates from The Super Fun, Not Scary Halloween Unit
:: sticky tack
:: toothbrushes
:: black and white card
:: green and orange paint
Print and cut out the pumpkin and bat templates from The Super Fun, Not Scary Halloween Unit.
Lay the pumpkin or bat down on a piece of card, using a little sticky tack to hold it in place so it doesn’t more around when you add paint.
You might like to pair the bat with a black piece of card to create a night sky picture
Set out paint in a shallow dish. You can use green and orange paint for a Halloween theme.
Then use toothbrushes to pick up some of the paint. Use your fingers and brush over the bristles of the toothbrush to make the paint splatter on to your picture. You can use a craft stick, pencil, or the handle of a paint brush instead of your own hand, if you don’t like to get your fingers messy.
Repeat the technique to splatter the paint right over the top of your bat or pumpkin. You can stick with one colour of paint or combine several colours.
Leave your picture to dry on a flat surface. Once all the paint is dry you can carefully peel off your bat or pumpkin template to reveal your hidden design.
The area that was covered now reveals the negative-space silhouette of your bat or pumpkin, with the splatters of paint creating a border around the outside.
