Scratch art sunflower art project for kids
Scratch art is a classic art technique that every child should try! It uses oil pastels to create layers of colour. Then you scratch off the top layer to reveal the hidden colours underneath.
By using oil pastels in yellow and orange, with a top layer of black, brown or blue we can create gorgeous sunflower art.
Materials needed:
oil pastels in yellow, orange and green
oil pastels in black, dark blue or dark brown
white card
pencil, wooden skewer or other fine implement for mark making
How to make scratch art sunflowers
First prepare your card. Use yellow, orange, and green oil pastels to fill your card with colour. You may like to colour the area where your stalk will be green and reserve the yellow and orange colours for the area where your flower will be.
Next cover over these colours completely with a layer of black, dark blue or dark brown oil pastels.
Then you can begin to draw out your design. Use a pencil or wooden skewer to draw with and you will notice how it scratches off the top layer of dark oil pastel to reveal the bright colours underneath.
Use different marks, shapes, and patterns to add lots of texture to your sunflower.
You could draw one big sunflower head or create a whole garden of sunflowers. And if you want to make more, just colour up another piece of card in the two layers of oil pastel and keep on drawing.
