Add creativity and literacy to your construction corner with these printable building challenge cards. Perfect building prompts for play dough, blocks, clay and loose parts.
Printable construction challenge cards
These challenge cards give your children an invitation to use their imagination and engineering skills.
You can use them in your construction center, with loose parts, play dough, and any time you need a quick play prompt.
If your children are ever stuck for what to make, or they want a new challenge… let the cards decide what they should build!
By selecting a card at random they’re encouraged to try something new, building skills, imagination, and confidence.
How to use these construction challenge cards
Print out the cards (see how below) and cut them out. You can laminate them for extra durability if you would like.
Set the cards out alongside your construction materials. That might be:
:: in your construction corner
:: with blocks
:: with play dough
:: with clay
:: with loose parts, big or small
:: outdoors with natural materials
:: with craft materials
:: simply with paper, scissors, and tape
Rise to the challenge!
The challenge is to pick a card and see if you can build whatever it suggests.
Your children could work alone or in pairs.
You can set a time limit, or give only a limited selection of materials.
Your children might like to have a competition and vote on the best build, or might prefer for everyone to have the chance to show-and-tell what they make.
As they build they are practicing vital skills: developing creativity and design ideas, selecting materials to use, problem solving, developing perseverance, and stretching their imagination.
