Carving pumpkins is one of our favourite Halloween traditions and I like to involve the girls as much as possible, even if I’m not quite happy to hand over the carving knife just yet. As you can see, they do the scooping and use a pencil to draw their designs on – which I then cut out for them.
There are other ways your children can get involved with the pumpkin decorating. Anna from The Imagination Tree shared this idea for a sparkly pumpkin, made by her 2 year old Cakie, with last week’s Play Academy – isn’t it fab?
And these jewelled pumpkins were made by Emma, daughter and artist in residence at Mama Smiles.
Are you decorating pumpkins this year? If you are, there’s a fun pumpkin carving competition over at Mediocre Mum‘s, with lots more designs to inspire you.

Thanks for sharing my little artist in residence’s masterpieces! =)
Thank her for the great inspiration Maryanne
Very cute ideas!!
We got the girls two little pumpkins to decorate themselves. They chose to paint them. They turned out pretty cute!
Thanks Jennifer.
I love the different ideas! We painted pumpkins at our house. You can look at them if you’d like at http://mommylittlehelper.blogspot.com
They’re great Heather and I love all your other pumpkin ideas. Thanks for the link.
These are great ideas for involving little ones. Thanks for sharing them.
Oh! Your girl’s did superbly on their pumpkins! Well done them!
We haven’t done a pumpkin this year (am a bit of a Halloween Ba Humbug)… but maybe next!

Great stuff for the under-3 set! Love it!
Thanks Molly – I always like to have ways for the very youngest to join in.
I love all the ideas that don’t require carving. It doesn’t look like our pumpkins will get carved this year.
JDaniel4′s Mom – I think it’s good to try something different
We are doing ours tonight!!! My boys are still little but they love just feeling the pumpkin goo!
I agree Jackie – they’re so touchy-feely.
